St Thomas' Primary School

St Thomas' School was founded by the Presentation Sisters in July 1909. According to Ruth Marchant James (1980), the school was named after St Thomas Aquinas rather than St Thomas the Apostle ('Doubting Thomas') for whom the nearby church was named.

"The Presentation Sisters came from Kildare, Ireland, arriving in Cottesloe in 1905, before establishing the school in 1909 in the tradition of Catholic education pioneer Nano Nagle, whose commitment to compassion and service continues to inspire the school community today." (CEWA website)

The 110th anniversary was celebrated in July 2019:
"St Thomas Primary School in Claremont celebrated 110 years last month, with the school community and guests reflecting on their rich tradition since being founded by the Presentation Sisters.
The day began with a Mass at St Thomas Church that acknowledged the milestone along with the Feast of St Thomas the Apostle [3 July] and the dedication of the Presentation Sisters, attended by Presentation Sisters, students, school families and staff, parishioners and guests.
Following Mass and morning tea a new artwork was unveiled in the school’s Junior Primary area.
The work, created by renowned WA artist Clare McFarlane, represents the connection between the school and parish.
This painting was not the only art to feature in the celebrations, with an impressive collection of art on display for guests, including a painting by St Thomas Art Teacher, Kate Byrne, depicting the historical journey of the school." (CEWA website)
