Barnett Street is not shown on an 1865 map but appears on Woodhouse's map of 1877. Dr H.C. Barnett owned at least two town lots in the street, 936 and 937, as well as the adjoining lot 933, which fronted onto Quarry Street and backed onto Fremantle Park. On lot 933 he built Park Bungalow, which was let to C.Y. O'Connor for two periods in the 1890s and demolished in the 1960s. It stood on a 'steep cliff' of stone which has since been removed. Barnett built a house at what is now 4 Barnett Street, so on lot 947, apparently in 1896, according to Fremantle Library. (Did he own that lot also?) That house is still extant as the second house in the street on the left hand side, next to Isaac Bolton's house, Pendennis, still standing at 2 Barnett Street. The doctor had his last house built on lot 937, looking over the Park, in 1896-97, and then died in 1897. That house has been owned since 1988 by Robert Bodkin, of Bodkin's Bootery.
The next street to the east, Shuffrey Street, was named in honour of prominent local resident George S. Shuffrey, who owned a hous he called Hillcroft on the northern side of Barnett Street, where he lived from 1897 (and perhaps before) to 1901.
Prominent architect Murray Slavin designed and built his own house in the street.
Barnett Street has a bend in the middle, and then a sharp turn left when it comes to Fremantle Park. It originally joined up with Stirling Street, which has since become Shuffrey Street. Now, neither Barnett nor Shuffrey Street continues as a paved road to the Park, so the half dozen houses facing it only have a footpath outside their front fences, tho their street postal addresses are still 14-20 Barnett Street.
