LINKS WITH THE PAST.
Interesting incidents in the early settlement of Western Australia are recalled by the recent death, at Rockingham, of Mr. John White, who arrived in Perth with his parents in August, 1842. The family consisted of Richard and Elizabeth White, four sons and three daughters, the youngest of whom died in infancy, and a large area of land was taken up at Kelmscott under an agreement entered into with Mr. J. S. Roe, Surveyor-General. The locality was known as Sott's Flat, and a two storey building, erected in those far-off days, is still in occupation by the Harris family, who were also early settlers on the Canning River. The White family came from Oxfordshire, and portion of the estate at Armadale, owned by the descendants, is named Chinnor, after their English birthplace. The eldest son, Jabez, married and settled near Gosnells, and the brothers John and Frank married two sisters—the daughters of George Stedman Watts, also of Oxfordshire. Two of John's daughters married brothers—F. J. and W. E. Saw of Rockingham and Armadale, respectively, and the remaining brother, Phillip, who formed a homestead near Maddington left a large family. Of the two sisters, the oldest, Rachel, married Captain John Bateman, founder of the Fremantle firm of J. and W. Bateman, and the second became Mrs. Robert Hicks, also of Fremantle.
