North Fremantle, originally part of Fremantle, broke away in October 1895 to become an independent municipality. The first mayor of North Fremantle was Daniel Keen Congdon. John McCabe was Secretary to the East Fremantle Football Club and Mayor of North Fremantle from 1924 to 1931. McCabe Street and McCabe Place, North Fremantle, are named after him.
